The term “Alkaline” is used very loosely today, and is often interchanged for water that should really be called ionized water. There is a big difference in these two different types of water. Water that is alkaline is actually water that has a pH registering 7.0 and higher. Water that has a pH of 7 is considered having a neutral pH. Alkalinity is a measure of the ability of your water to resist changes in pH, which would tend to make the water more acidic. Alkalinity of water comes from certain substances being present in the water that include: carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides.
Bicarbonates are the most common cause of water alkalinity, and are found in almost all natural water sources, as are carbonates. Common bicarbonates are calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium which will all raise the pH level of water.
The main differentiation in these two types of waters is indicated in their names, one is ionized the other is not. What is Ionization?
Water Ionization is the process of ionizing water through electrolysis. The electrolysis of the water is the main difference in ionized water, and plain higher ph alkaline water that contains substances which increase its ph, like baking soda, to make it alkaline.
When water undergoes ionization, the concentration of hydroxide ions in the water is increased. The hydroxide ions in the water cause a negative charge in the water, creating reduction-oxidation. So aside from the measurement of pH, another factor that is measured in ionized water, is its (reduction-oxidation) or redox potential.
What is Redox Potential and Why is it Important?
In the past, we only measured the alkalinity or acidity of water to determine if it was fit for drinking. When it comes to determining whether the water is capable of working as an anti-oxidant, the important factor to consider is the redox potential or ORP (oxidation reduction potential).
ORP or redox potential is a measure of the potential of chemical species to acquire electrons. When tap water is electrolyzed alkalized reduced 9.5 ph drinking water is produced. The reduced water’s ORP can be as much as – 1000mV. The negative potential of the water is what makes it good for the body. The excess electrons in the reduced water bind with the free radicals in the body. This happens because the ORP or redox potential has a negative charge, and free radicals have a positive charge causing them to bond.
What are free radicals?
Free radicals are ions or atoms with unpaired valance electrons. Because of the unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly reactive matters. They can be naturally created in the body, and anti-oxidants should balance them out. However, we get free radicals from other sources today that include, alcohol, chemicals, toxins, etc. causing an unbalanced and overwhelming amount of free radicals within our bodies. When left unchecked, free radicals can cause damage to the body at the cellular level.
